Horn Students Win Big At Academics Tournament

Horn Academy Elementary students outscored 11 other Houston-area elementary schools to win first place on Jan. 30 at a UIL Academics Tournament.


Teachers and students at Horn Academy Elementary School are celebrating after a team of students bagged a first-place win at a recent academics tournament.

Over 200 students from 12 elementary schools in the Houston Independent School District competed in the UIL Academics Tournament on Jan. 30 at Yates High School. Horn came in first place overall with 246 points. Student teams also took 1st-place trophies in 3rd and 4th grade spelling, 5th grade spelling, number sense, and maps, charts and graphs.

The individual Horn students that placed in the competition include:

  • Creative Writing — 2nd grade — Zack Pham, Kayla Williams, Sloan Rigamonti (finalist)
  • Oral Reading — Derek Adrion, Sarah Morgan, Han Zhang (finalist)
  • Social Studies — Greer Beasley, Sidney Botello, Mackenzie Parsons (2nd place)
  • Ready Writing — 3rd and 4th grades — Julia Griffin, Charlotte Ehlers (finalist), Zoe Pham (3rd place)
  • Ready Writing — 5th grade — Astra Sun, Stacy Yard (3rd place)
  • Dictionary Skills — Lily DeCamp, Michelle Lin, Eli Young (finalist)
  • Story Telling — Halie Sims, Taisia Pominova (1st place)
  • Listening — Trey Gordon (finalist), Hannah Pope (finalist), Kevin Rosales (1st place)
  • Impromptu Speaking — Tasharian Robinson, Lily Sizemore, Miles Quincy (1st place)
  • Spelling — 3rd and 4th grades — Jeremy Williams, Jasmine Huang (finalist), Jackson Ramirez (finalist)
