MEXICO CITY (AP) — The day after being criticized by Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernández issued an apology on Thursday for his sexist comments that sparked a flood of criticism.
In recent days, the Chivas player posted several messages on his social networks in which he urged women to honor masculinity and to accept being led by men, among other controversial statements.
“I deeply regret any confusion or discomfort my recent words may have caused; it was never my intention to limit, hurt or divide,” wrote the “Chicharito” on his Instagram account.
Hernández’s words cost him an unspecified fine from the Gender Commission of the Mexican Football Federation, in addition to an internal fine from Chivas, the club he has been with since last year.
Additionally, Puma, the brand sponsoring his current club, distanced itself from the player’s statements.
“I will take this opportunity to understand, grow and continue working to be a better version of myself,” Hernández added. “Thank you for your understanding, your high expectations, and your love and companionship on this journey.”
Hernández married Australian model Sara Kohan in 2019, had a couple of children with her, and divorced a couple of years later. It was during that phase of his life that he hired life coach Diego Dreyffus and began to be very active on social media.
“As a father, man and member of this community, my priority is to act with respect, humility and responsibility,” Hernández said. “I’m listening, reflecting and committed to expressing myself with greater clarity and sensitivity, especially on topics as delicate as these.”
Hernández, the Mexican national team’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals, debuted with Chivas in 2006 and four years later moved to Europe to join Manchester United, from where he was transferred to Real Madrid. He is the only Mexican to have worn both shirts.
He also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Sevilla before heading to MLS to play four seasons with the LA Galaxy.
He returned to Mexico early last year after signing a two-year contract with Chivas, but his performance has not been optimal, with only two goals in 25 appearances.
