Tyler Resources for Food Access and Replacing Spoiled Food After Power Outages

October 10, 2025

TYLER, TX (EAST TEXAS NEWS) – In Smith County, many people were still without electricity on Thursday. There are resources in Tyler and Smith counties that those affected can access.

Every day, including weekends, at 4:30 p.m., the Tyler Salvation Army runs a takeout meal for anyone who needs it, according to Captain Jeremy Walker. (633 N.Broadway Avenue Tyler, TX 75702)

“We also have a food pantry that is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 12, where people can come and pick up groceries to help replenish those refrigerators and foods that spoiled,” Walker said.

Walker said it’s important to be prepared to respond in times of need.

“God provides in this community and that’s what we’re here to do, is to serve those in need. And need shows up in many different forms for many different people,” he said.

The East Texas Food Bank has resources throughout the month, from take-home pantries to mobile food drives and more. Executive Director Dennis Cullinane said that in a limited disaster like this, when the Red Cross isn’t set up, the food bank relies on partner agencies.

“The pantries have a large supply of nonperishable items, they need to be stocked, and we’re monitoring any additional load they experience from people coming for emergency food,” Cullinane said.

It’s still too early to determine the storm’s full impact, but “we expect there to be more volume at those pantries and we’re ready to respond to that,” Cullinane said.
