LIVINGSTON, Texas (EAST TEXAS NEWS) – A man convicted in the machete murder of a Houston-area teenager in 2014 was killed in his cell at the Polunsky Unit.

According to a report from the Office of the Texas Attorney General, William Alexander Valladares, 28, was found unconscious in his cell on July 29.

Valladares was transported to the infirmary for life-saving measures, but was pronounced dead that morning.

The state report states Valladares died from a traumatic brain injury caused by a blunt object inflicted by another inmate.

Valladares was serving a 40-year sentence for his involvement in the murder of José Luis Mera, 14, a Houston resident, in 2014.

Mera’s body was found in September 2014 near a reservoir. He was an eighth-grade student in the Aldine Independent School District.

Valladares had been transferred to the Polunsky Unit on July 23.
