Birdwell Elementary Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Traditions

October 5, 2025

TYLER, TX (EAST TEXAS NEWS) – Folkloric dances, mariachi, and Mexican music are just a few of the ways Birdwell Elementary School students celebrated Cinco de Mayo.

The dancers raised the Mexican flag high during several traditional folkloric ballet performances for students and staff.

Dances that tell the story of Mexico’s diverse states were presented. The performances included Maya and pre-Columbian dances that are still preserved today.

Alex Palencia, the director of the group Mexico 2000 Folkloric Ballet, said, “it’s great that schools, principals, and people are open to groups like theirs to showcase these traditions and these opportunities.”
