Longview to Host UKC Dog Show Weekend

August 11, 2025

Longview, Texas — Preparations are underway for the United Dog Owners Group (UDOG) UKC Dog Show, set to take place this weekend.

The event will feature a dog show that includes conformation rounds, often referred to as beauty contests, and scent work, where dogs and their handlers team up to track and locate a specific odor. There will also be several vendors.

“UKC is fantastic. It’s a family-friendly environment, and a lot of people get excited, help each other, and have a good time,” said Debbie Holmes, president of the UDOG UKC show.

She added that UKC, or United Kennel Club shows, tend to run at a slower pace than those of the American Kennel Club (AKC), which provides a good atmosphere for beginners and families looking to spend a fun weekend.

There are very talented people here who compete in canine sports across the country. They come to our shows because they also enjoy relaxing a bit, Holmes noted. “There are also newcomers just starting out, and this is a fantastic place for beginners to begin because it’s a very friendly and educational environment.”

Matthew Proctor has been showing dogs for more than 40 years and is preparing to show his female, Opal, again. He commented that, while the competition is entertaining, it’s important not to lose sight of the objective.

“These animals are not accessories or purses to make you feel better about yourself. It shouldn’t be about the ribbons,” Proctor said. “It should be about protecting these pedigrees, preserving the breed type, and ensuring that the lines are well defined.”

Although competitors must pay to participate, the show is open to the public and admission is free. It starts Saturday at 8:00 a.m., with doors opening at 7:00 a.m. and continuing until roughly 6:30 p.m. at the Maude Cobb Convention Center.

On Sunday, the spectacle resumes at 8 a.m. and runs even later into the night, featuring a memorial competition in honor of two members who passed away.
