When winter arrives in New York, heating stops being a cost you can postpone. For many families, keeping the home warm means facing higher bills just as other household expenses rise.
That’s why it’s worth reviewing the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). As of November 2, 2026, residents who meet the requirements can apply for the benefit for the 2026-2027 season. The aid can reach $1,086 dollars, depending on the type of heating, income, and family characteristics.
The amount does not guarantee that everyone will receive that sum. Support is calculated according to the circumstances of each home, and in many cases the money is sent directly to the energy or fuel provider.
Who can receive HEAP assistance in New York?
The program is aimed at low-income households, both homeowners and renters. According to the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA), to meet the general requirements there must be at least one U.S. citizen or a non-citizen who qualifies under the household’s immigration status.
You must also meet income limits or receive certain public benefits, in addition to providing a valid Social Security number for every family member, according to state rules.
For the 2026-2027 season, these are the maximum gross monthly incomes:
For example, if four people live in your home, the household’s gross monthly income must not exceed $6,852. That is roughly $82,224 per year.
You may also qualify if you receive SNAP, Temporary Assistance, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) under Code A for individuals living alone. Final eligibility depends on the review of your case.
Where do the $1,086 in aid come from?
The amount changes based on the fuel you use and the conditions of your home. The state’s information for this season contemplates benefits up to $990 for households using oil, kerosene, or propane and paying directly to the provider. For those who use firewood, pellets, or coal, the support can reach $700.
Add-ons can be added to those amounts for households meeting specific conditions. Among them are lower incomes and the presence of a vulnerable person: someone aged 60 or older, a child under 6, or a person with a permanent disability.
The combination of these add-ons explains why some families can reach $1,086 dollars. It is not a guaranteed amount nor a free fund to spend: the regular benefit is intended to cover heating costs.
How can you apply for heating assistance?
The process depends on where you live. If you reside in New York, you can submit your application online, in person, or by mail.
Have ready documents proving your address, recent pay stubs for household members, and an identification. They may also ask for an electricity, gas, or fuel bill, or a letter from the landlord if heating is included in the rent.
What if you can’t pay for heating anymore?
There is another option if your situation is urgent. The HEAP Emergency Benefit is scheduled to open on January 4, 2027. It targets households that have run out of fuel or face a suspension of electricity or gas service, as long as they meet the economic and other requirements.
Additionally, New York has a separate program to repair or replace heating equipment. The support can reach up to $4,000 for repairs and $8,000 for replacements, depending on the work needed and eligibility.
Don’t wait for the highest bill to review these options. HEAP funds are limited and availability can change during the season. If you need help, first consult the state’s official portals before submitting documents or personal information.
