HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas (EAST TEXAS NEWS) — A jailer with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested after being accused of sexually inappropriate conduct toward an inmate.

The jailer, whose identity has not yet been released, faces charges of official misconduct and civil rights violations involving a person in custody.

The investigation began on January 17 after an inmate reported the incident to a jail sergeant, according to a press release from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

“Through the investigation, it was determined that the jailer did in fact engage in inappropriate behavior,” the statement said.

The jailer was terminated when he returned to work on January 19, and the Texas Rangers took over the investigation.

Subsequently, a grand jury found sufficient evidence to proceed with the case and an arrest warrant was obtained.

The jailer turned himself in at the Houston County Jail shortly after 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, according to the statement.
