Double Struggle: Hispanic Woman Diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer During Pregnancy

October 17, 2025

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WPTA/Gray News) – A woman from Indiana was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer while she prepares to welcome her first child.

With five months of pregnancy, Katie Hernández, 26, felt overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty upon learning her diagnosis. Her main concern now is how chemotherapy will affect her pregnancy.

After consultations with her doctors at the Parkview Packnett Family Cancer Institute, the Hispanic woman began treatment. She says that once she delivers her son, a boy, the doctors will examine her to see how the chemotherapy has fared and determine what additional steps should follow.

The primary goal for doctors right now is to keep the cancer at bay as much as possible.

This Saturday, Hernández and her fiancé, Shawn Reason, will host a sort of babyshower and fundraising event.

“She does a lot for the community, is very kind to others, and I just want the same for her,” Reason said.
