Police Officers Show Support for Fallen Lawmakers’ Children on the First Day of School

September 29, 2025

Whitehouse, Texas (East Texas News) — Police officers lined the entrance to a Whitehouse elementary school on Wednesday morning for the arrival of the children of a fallen officer.

Smith County Sheriff’s Deputy Lorenzo Bustos, 29, was completing his final day of field training on July 29 when, authorities say, he was struck by a drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop on State Highway 155. Bustos died later at a hospital in Tyler.

On Wednesday morning, law enforcement officers from several agencies greeted Bustos’s children on their first day back at school without their father. The children and Bustos’s widow were escorted to the school in a patrol unit and then greeted by a line of officers.

“Our goal this morning was to introduce ourselves to the Bustos family to let them know they have our support, our love, and our gratitude for his service,” said Lieutenant Matt Lazarine of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Represented agencies included Henderson Police Department, where Bustos had worked before joining the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in February.
