Schwellenbach Strikes Out 12, Murphy Hits Grand Slam as Braves Defeat Phillies 6-1

September 24, 2025

ATLANTA (AP) — Spencer Schwellenbach delivered a career-best 12 strikeouts, and Sean Murphy capped Atlanta’s night with a grand slam as the Braves recovered from a humiliating defeat to topple the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 on Saturday.

Schwellenbach (7-4) yielded just one run on three hits over seven innings, also issuing a walk. He threw 90 pitches, 64 of them for strikes.

Murphy went 4-for-2 with a double, and his seventh-inning grand slam was the 10th homer of the season for the catcher.

Austin Riley contributed a 4-for-2 effort with an RBI, and Nick Allen added an RBI single for Atlanta, which had been blanked in its two prior games, including a 13-0 loss on Friday in the series opener.

The Venezuelan Jesús Luzardo (7-4) was charged with two runs on seven hits and two walks across five innings for Philadelphia. He struck out seven and left five runners on base, keeping his team in the game for most of the night.

Alec Bohm drove in Philadelphia’s lone run with a single in the sixth, cutting Atlanta’s lead to 2-1, but Nick Castellanos lofted a fly ball to the outfield with two men aboard to end the frame without further damage.

The Braves opted to sit Michael Harris II, who has been scuffling, and handed center-field duties to Eli White. Harris had started all but one game this season, yet he’s hitting just .212.

White went 0-for-3 with a run scored.

For the Braves, Venezuelan Ronald Acuña Jr. went 3-for-1 with a run, Dominican Marcell Ozuna went 4-for-2 with a run, and Mexican Alex Verdugo went 2-for-0.
